Over-categorization[edit]

Please don't add files that are already properly categorized to more general categories. Avoid COM:OVERCAT. --Zinnsoldat (talk) 15:27, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization of images to Santa Maria (Azores)[edit]

In reference to your categorization of several photos (49) by Michael Gaylard to Category:Santa Maria (Azores), please note that this is incorrect. The images referred do not show any aspect of the island (location or content), but rather depict events, actions or imagery from the island of Madeira. Further, Mr. Gaylard has named his files for the ship/caravel/cruise depicted in his original Flicker account. I kindly request that those images remain associated with the location (Madeira) or be classified/categorized accordingly with the ship or other aspects of the imagery. One thing is clear: these images are not associated with the island of Santa Maria in the Azores, as you insist.ruben jc ZEORYMER (talk) 00:11, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Range block?[edit]

Hello,

It seems that we have to calm down an incompetent user(*). How can a range block be demanded? Our over-/mis-categorizer is there: Special:Contributions/2408:8215:1C01:751:84F3:23B8:748:17D0/32.

(*) I'm also rather incompetent but I listen to others' remarks.

Is there any plausible reason for this revert (and I mean 'plausible')? -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 22:18, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any plausible reason for reshape an image in 3:2 aspect ratio over the original upload (and I mean 'plausible')? Tm (talk) 23:46, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. 3:2 is the normal photo aspect ratio and grass is not relevant. Thanks for not providing any good reason. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 07:46, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

22 January 2020 (UTC)

No. Again no 'plausible' reason given to upload a new version over an original one just because you think that all images have to have one aspect ration. Thanks for not providing any good reason. Tm (talk) 12:36, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tm, @Estopedist1: removed Category:Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization from Category:To be checked. I, as a consequence removed the images from Category:Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, as all the images are in Category:Photographs by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization anyhow. And to get them into Category:Uncategorized to enforce proper categorization where missing. Category:Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization needs further categorization into subcategories (it is too crowded) and categorization by persons, events and location. It does not help to undo this. It would help if you could further categorize some of the images. regards --Herzi Pinki (talk) 21:20, 26 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Clearing the cache[edit]

Hi. When you redirected Category:Musical instrument museums in Portugal to Category:Music museums in Portugal the redirected category is still showing as an empty cat in the target category. One way to solve this quickly is a null edit. Open the redirected page, go to the very end and delete the automatic empty space. Save the category (any summary you wish) and it won’t actually save it but it removes the redirected category from the target category. I hope that’s useful. 193.62.152.193 11:04, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to understand why you reverted my map edit https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1855_Colton_Map_of_Kansas_and_Nebraska_(first_edition)_-_Geographicus_-_NebraskaKansas-colton-1855.jpg

Is there a Wikipedia rule that old maps must keep their yellowed aged look? My edit makes the map look more like it did when originally published. Jim Evans (talk) 14:16, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Now I see you've been going along behind me undoing many of my edits. I spend a lot of time doing these. If you are going to undo them with a quick click please have courtesy to notify me you are doing this and the reason. Jim Evans (talk) 14:30, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Comment How do you know what was the "look more like it did when originally published", if GLAMs dont know? Also Commons:Overwriting_existing_files#Exceptions is pretty clear that "If digital restoration work is being done on a historical document or artwork, the restoration (no matter how minor) should always be uploaded under a new filename from the original file, providing a link back to the source on which it was based in the new file's "other versions" field.". So if you want a new version, upload under a new filename. Hope it is usefull. Tm (talk) 14:34, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just as an example, in the file File:Cleveland_First_Cabinet.png cant you see why your claim that you "removed age yellowing" is clearly wrong. Just a hint:
I don't see the map in your link As for Cleveland_First_Cabinet.png. I don't see where I'm wrong Jim Evans (talk) 16:01, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you dont know your source material, i.e. Carte de visite and what are their characteristics, dont claim to be removing "age yellowing". This is not a hint. Tm (talk) 17:45, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You're a rude sort. What I feel sure it true, a picture of a president of the U.S. with his cabinet would not have been so dull and faded originally. But, from here one I will leave old pictures alone even if one cannot make out much like this one. This is not sarcasm -- Can you tell me how old a picture has to be for it to be called a "historical . . . artwork" Jim Evans (talk) 18:38, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
After being told what is wrong and still think that you know everything is bad and trying to show you what your doing wrong is not being rude.
Again, saying that a "picture of a president of the U.S. with his cabinet would not have been so dull and faded originally" and claim to be removing "age yellowing", shows that you are merely in assumptions based in no knowledge of the source material. See what a Carte de visite, read something about the process. If you want to make a derivative work (i.e. other version), upload your version under a new filename and link to the original. Tm (talk) 18:54, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You didn't answer my question. Can you tell me how old a picture has to be for it to be called a "historical . . . artwork" Jim Evans (talk) 19:34, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Tim, I hope you don't mind me jumping into a conversation on your talk page. @Jim Evans: Please see Commons:Overwriting existing files. Except in very limited circumstances, you shouldn't replace an existing image, no matter how historical or recent. It is normally better to upload the alternate version as a new file under a new file name. That way editors can choose whether to use the unaltered original or the enhanced alternative. If you upload your new versions as derivatives of the orignal and licence them on the same terms, your new versions can be kept and used. Feel free to ask for help at the help desk or my talk page if you need assistance with setting up a derivative work. From Hill To Shore (talk) 21:12, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Lisbon" castle walls[edit]

Image File:Moor Castle Walls, Lisbon (31578156765).jpg is not of Lisbon castle. It's way too big and the landscape doesn't fit. Moreover, the area around the castle at Lisbon is densely populated and this shows forested hills. My guess would be that this is either Sintra (but I think that's more densely forested) or Silves. In any case, not Lisbon. --Ilja.nieuwland (talk) 20:00, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Filename and category shows very well were this image was taken. Cheers. Tm (talk) 20:29, 11 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Those are not meaningless names, as these were the names given originally by the photographer and these files have been discussed in several venues. Also why putting the models full name in the filename? Tm (talk) 12:50, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
They are totally meaningless. Please read Commons:File naming: “descriptive, chosen according to what the image displays or contents portray”. --Cody escouade delta (d) 12:57, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And this filenames are descriptive, as someone that is a filemover is saying to you. Also why did you rename this files to the models full name, as you did to the category in your last edits here in Commons (in January 2020), when this model name was never mentioned in the files, in the flickr descriptions or in any other place? To someone that blurred an image of two persons in a driving school this is very odd, as is the focus on the files and categories related with this model. Tm (talk) 12:59, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No they are not descriptive, that is why they were renamed (and not by me). Because this model is known as "Gemma Louise", not only "Gemma", so the full name must appear in the file name.
The pictures of the driving school has been add to promote its company, the user was blocked on the french wikipedia.
--Cody escouade delta (d) 13:11, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, they are descriptive, as i filemover is saying. I dont understand your fixation with this model, as you moved the name from a single name to the full name in the category when there was not direct connection and wihtout any reason to move the category, this back in January. Now you want to put her full name in all files??? Wanting to say the full name of the model everywhere, when you blurred the faces in an image of a driving school is ironic in the minimum. Floor vs. plenary chamber[edit]

-- Darwin Ahoy! 21:47, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"Activity on the floor of a council or legislature, such as debate, may be contrasted with meetings and discussion which takes place in committee, for which there are often separate committee rooms.[1] Some actions, such as the overturning of an executive veto, may only be taken on the floor". Tm (talk) 21:49, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Senate floor. Tm (talk) 21:50, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Glossário do Senado Federal dos Estados Unidos. Tm (talk) 21:51, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

21:59, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Você leu a própria fonte que colocou? "Action "on the floor" is that which occurs as part of a formal session of the full Senate" - não percebeu que isso e´apenas a forma de designar a actividade que se passa dentro do plenário, e não o próprio plenário?-- Darwin Ahoy! 22:02, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

22:10, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Veja https://www.senate.ca.gov/ e veja "The next Senate Floor Session will convene on Monday, May 4, 2020". "Senate Floor Session", enfim. Tm (talk) 22:08, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Isso não é o edifício. É impressionante, a casmurrice e a persistência no erro.-- Darwin Ahoy! 22:10, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The Legislative Process on the House Floor: An Introduction. With very few exceptions, the House determines and enforces its own procedures for considering legislation on the floor. Its standing rules include several alternative sets of procedures for acting on individual bills and resolutions. (...) In general, though, all these procedures permit a majority of Members to work their will without excessive delays. The House passes many bills by motions to suspend the rules, with limited debate and no floor amendments, but only with the support of at least two-thirds of the Members voting." Esclarecedor, aonde há moções, votações, etc no floor. Tm (talk) 22:13, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

01:09, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. Naval Academy Graduation Categories[edit]

I don't know where my head is today, but I seemed to have accidentally screwed up a lot of the pictures in Category:U.S. Naval Academy Graduation May 12, 2020, between accidentally putting them in the May 14 category, taking them out but hiding the change, etc. I think I have fixed all of my mistakes now, but I just wanted to apologize regardless. --Elisfkc (talk) 16:28, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

And the number of files in the categories in Flickr correspond with the number of files in each album in Flickr, so no harm done. Cheers. Tm (talk) 19:14, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Stop reverting my edits[edit]

You are ovwerwriting files with different works of art\sources, when upload under a new name is the norm. So upload your versions\works of art under a new filename. Tm (talk) 22:15, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
They are the same work of art, but i've uploaded a better quality version of it. If you look at the 4 images you will see what i'm talking about!! PhotoBooth11 (talk) 22:19, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Read Commons:Overwrite. Tm (talk) 22:22, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Problem now is all of the better quality images aren't on wikipedia anymore. So if you can add them we won't be warring anymore!! PhotoBooth11 (talk) 22:37, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Stop lying, as you can see that so called "better quality images" are alread uploaded under new filenames but you keep overwriting them, so you are the one that is warring.
Can you add the images to wikipedia please!! PhotoBooth11 (talk) 22:42, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Do you expect to 1- fall for that excuse that you cant see them, 2 - Even if you cant see what is clearly marked and linked i will not explain where they are, as i´am not your employee and your actions do not warrant such favour. Tm (talk) 22:54, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So you're not going to add images to wikipedia? PhotoBooth11 (talk) 22:56, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Stop wasting my time. I´am not your employee that you can order around. Tm (talk) 22:59, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So you threw a tantrum and can't even be bothered to add images you've uploaded to wikipedia...PhotoBooth11 (talk) 23:07, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are the one that overwrites images with others completely different, keep reverting even after warnings of other users, keep open deletion requests of different works of art just by spite. and i´am the one that is making a tamtrum? Tm (talk) 23:11, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nomes[edit]

Terramar.

--Lojwe (talk) 21:27, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tm (talk) 22:06, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You changed the category. But have a look at the image. The name of the vessel is painted with large letters on the ship. Here in Commons we use the names of categories the names as painted on the vessel. To make it easy to find images. So the Category:S.ta Rita de Cássia (ship, 1995) was the correct category. --Stunteltje ([[User talk:Stunteltje|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 22:08, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In what policies do you base your assertions? Also do you know what means that dot in portuguese in this context. My move was correct, as shown by the local municipality, local news site, regional radio, regional newspaper or a national newspaper. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 22:18, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately we do not have strict rules for naming categories in Commons. But it is intended to make it as easy as possible to find images. No problem at all with different naming systems, based on the language, in local wikipedia's. But Commons is for international use. Not exepert international users are not aware of what that dot means in portuguese language and look for the ship by the name as painted on the vessel. I categorised thausands of ship and follow that practice. --Stunteltje ([[User talk:Stunteltje|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 22:31, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ping I didn't answer to one other, not multiple users as you claim, as those moves were self-evident as to keep the flickr number and so there was no need to reply as those files were uploaded from Flickr so they should keep their flickr number, and the accounts that made those files names were official accounts of the german Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute and Norman B. Leventhal Map Center. Revoking my filemover right is as an unilateral move without any warning and appeal is nonsense as i kept your names+the flickr number and have not made any bad moves. You are focusing on tangential issues and have not addressed any of the reasons why I removed the right:
  • You repeatedly reverted clearly beneficial renames; in cases like this one, you replaced a clear and accurate filename with a generic one. COM:FRNOT states that Template:Tq
  • You do not use edit summaries for your moves: of your last 500 moves, less than 5% have edit summaries.
  • You were moving files solely to add the flickr number, which is not a valid rename reason per Commons:File renaming. This is especially problematic, as I mentioned above, because the full-size files were not even available on flickr, and because the files have an incorrect license on flickr.
  • Most importantly, you refused to respond to two different objections - both by experienced contributors, no less - on your talk page. Response to queries about your usage of advanced permissions is a critical requirement of having such permissions.
Until you make it clear that you understand why all four of these behaviors are problematic, and explain how you will avoid doing them in the future, I will not support the restoration of the filemover right. Pi.1415926535 ([[User talk:Pi.1415926535|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 02:35, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
this one is "an beneficial rename"?. Original filename is "File:Rostock Ostsee (49832531778)" in german and the moved is "File:Rostock Stadthafen aerial photograph 2019-08-11 02.jpg" in english. Now is it possible to move an filename from german to english? Then Commons:File_renaming#Which_files_should_not_be_renamed policy is wrong when it says that "Files should NOT be renamed only to translate the filename to another language (...) Remember, Commons is a multilingual project, so there's no reason to favor English over other languages.". Is anyone saying that moving a filename from German to English is supported by policy?
I did not reverted your correct change of license, so your comment that "the files have an incorrect license on flickr" is irrelevant and tangential. Besides the reasons i said above, also Commons:File_renaming#Which_files_should_be_renamed? clearly says that files can be moved "At the original uploader’s request" as there was no "Unless there is a compelling reason not to".
It is irrelevant and tangential that "do not use edit summaries", as you claimed. Where is the policy that forces or advises strongly to it? Is it better to put almost all your moves as the blank and uniformative "clarify subject"?
"You refused to respond to two different objections", because, no one is forced to answer in his talkpage to keep tools or where is the policy that states this, when there is a clear reason not to a reply? Thats why there is administrators noticeboards, file discussion pages, category discussions, etc. Also should i respond to someone that moves to other language against what states the file moving policy? Or use a request by the original uploader? Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 03:04, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping Also it seems i´am not be the only one making file renaming guidelines. Not only you delete important information with your moves like when you deleted the Library of Congress Control Number 74693296 when you moved File:Highlandville, Massachusetts 1887. LOC 74693296.jpg to File:1887 bird's eye view map of Highlandville, Massachusetts.jpg, but he also delete important information like "Perspective map not drawn to scale. Hand colored. Bird's-eye-view. LC Panoramic maps (2nd ed.), 298.1 Available also through the Library of Congress Web site as a raster image. Includes illus. AACR2: 110" (that is hand-coloured, a 2 edition of this map, that is not drawn to scale), "Shelf ID G3764.N33A3 1887 .B3", "Location United States · Needham Heights · Massachusetts" and the fact that this map is part of the collection of "American Memory" and "Geography And Map Division". Cared to inform the original uploader of your supressions of information? What is more serious, the supression of important information or a dispute about what should be the proper filename Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 03:05, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ping File:1887 bird's eye view map of Highlandville, Massachusetts LOC 74693296.jpg has now been re-renamed, one of the files mentioned here that was part of the LOC batch upload projects. It is inappropriate to remove reference numbers from filenames when these are part of a standard naming convention. Further it is not a Commons norm to strip unique identity references from filenames, such as Internet Archive identity, Library of Congress LCCNs, OCLC references from book plates, etc. In particular it is the norm to include Flickr photo numbers in the filename, as most Flickr upload tools will do. These make it extremely easy to double check if files have already been uploaded by using a (processing cheap) search for titles, rather than using full source searches or regex searches (which may time-out).

Tm makes some perfectly valid points. Please reconsider the action in removing Tm's right, in the light that your own recent usage of file moves is non-standard and controversial. At a minimum as the acting administrator, it would be smart to take this administrator action for independent opinions at AN. Based on the few examples raised by Tm, your own use of the move rights is disruptive and against the guidelines, and itself may become subject to more detailed review should anyone want to trawl through the logs for a complete report of moves that strip identity numbers or arbitrarily change the file name language to English. At a personal level, I tend to ignore renames on my uploads, leaving it to the good judgement of others. Just because I have not rejected these moves within my own projects does not mean that these are not an issue, only that we have more urgent problems to solve together. Thanks -- ([[User talk:Fæ|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 04:06, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ping All of that is completely beside the point. Users with advanced permissions are expected to use those tools in a collaborative manner, including making their intentions clear and communicating with other editors when needed. Regardless of whether it is preferable to have source identifiers in the filename, Tm's actions of wheel-warring, refusing to use edit summaries while doing so, and refusing to communicate with other editors questioning those actions are absolutely unacceptable.
Regarding source identifiers in file names, where is the policy or consensus that they should not be removed from the file name when a file is being renamed for other reasons? (For all these maps that I renamed, I was standardizing the filename to "[date] bird's eye view map of [location]"; the previous names only had location. I was also uploading the full-size file directly from the source, replacing the much smaller version from flickr.) In particular, where has the community decided that flickr image numbers - which are only used by flickr, rather than identifiers like LCCN that may be cross-referenced by other sources - must be kept in the filename? Search handles redirects just fine; no one is breaking anyone's mass uploads by renaming. (If the source identifier is really that important, why not use something like structured data designed for querying, rather than filenames which are designed for human readability?) Also remember: the vast majority of people reusing images from Commons are not Commons editors, and certainly have not transferred files from flickr to Commons, and thus have absolutely no idea what the random numbers in the filename are.
Regarding language, the German-English filenames that Tm reverted were still more useful/specific for German speakers (Rostock Stadthafen = Rostock Harbor, plus the date) than his version (Rostock Ostsee = Rostock Baltic Sea, no date). If keeping the filenames solely in German was really the issue, why not ask the user who requested renaming (who is a native German speaker according to their userpage) to suggest an all-German filename, and/or politely ask the original filemovers not to approve interlanguage moves? Those would be collaborative rather than reactive behaviors.
And if you're looking to dig up dirt on me (why, exactly?), I'll spare you the effort: I've made exactly one interlanguage move, the vast majority of my renames that remove flickr number are either files I uploaded myself or a batch that another editor uploaded specifically for me to sort, and the most recent other files I renamed removing flickr numbers were some files from this mass upload. Pi.1415926535 ([[User talk:Pi.1415926535|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 05:51, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The consensus you looking for is Commons:File renaming. The harmonization of file names, such as during User:Fæ/LOC_maps which the example above conflicted with, is covered and you broke it. There is also the explicit statement Template:Tq you broke this too.
As for structured data, that would be exceptionally silly, considering that these are effectively invisible in source or Commons searches. We may as well be deleting the information.
Should you continue to fail to comply with the official guideline, then your rogue actions and forcing your personal ideas about renaming on the community using your authority as an administrator, will have to be raised at COM:AN. We have plenty of constructive things to do, please reconsider the path you are forcing us down here as I suspect you don't care that much about it to invest significantly more time on this. As for you only recalling a couple of examples of you making non-compliant renames, this is sufficient to demonstrate the case.
Your action against Tm is controversial, if only because your comprehension of the guidelines, that you are using to punish Tm for, appears weak or plainly wrong. From your statement here, is it safe to presume that you have now refused to ask for independent opinions about your action from the administrator community? Thanks -- ([[User talk:Fæ|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 09:50, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suggest neither you nor Tm rehash the evidence there that is already here. The intention is to avoid forum shopping, but to encourage fresh eyes on the evidence.

BTW, the precise statement that you made one interlanguage move is certainly incorrect, considering File:Dépôt_tram_Lechmere.jpg was moved from a French name to an English one in May this year, I have not tried searching your full history. -- ([[User talk:Fæ|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 12:13, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sanderling photos[edit]

Please stop reverting my work improving these photos, this is within the guidelines for photo edits. They were unused before I edited them, due to their poor lighting and composition; I brightened them and improved the composition for a specific purpose, as they were the only potentially good quality photos of the nominate subspecies of Sanderling in breeding plumage on Commons, and therefore important for Wikispecies and Wikidata as the best representation of the species. Your talk of this crops being within the guidelines does not hold to scrutiny. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 12:36, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The crop hasn't affected the subject (the bird), so it is clearly as in the museum specimen example "cropping much closer to the object was considered a minor crop". What was cropped is only blurred foreground and blurred background, which are not part of the subject. It isn't like cropping the man's body to show just his face, or cropping half the mountain (the original subject of Zizalga.jpg) to focus on the trees (the changed subject of the cropped derivative photo, which, b.t.w., I did). - MPF ([[User talk:MPF|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 13:35, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Images by Senedd Cymru – Welsh Parliament[edit]

Hi. I note that you've been harvesting Senedd Cymru – Welsh Parliament photographs from Flickr. Great work! However, the name changed a few years ago, so Category:National Assembly for Wales should now be a redirect -> the new name Category:Senedd. Thanks. Gatling gun[edit]

I'm not an expert but I think he's right it's a gatling gun as opposed to a maxim... Broichmore ([[User talk:Broichmore|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 16:55, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly this is not an maxim gun, as the maxim gun was the first successful automatic machine gun (i.e. did not needed an manual motion to fire after the first trigger pull), but is an hand cranked machine gun. I´am still tring to find the model (an six barrel gun), albeit without success until now, but the ammo drum seems to be an accles drum. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 19:00, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Useful would be to find an table of organization and equipment of the "7th Battalion, London Regiment" or equivalent of arould 1895\1897. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 19:05, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The US army used the Colt M1883 Gatling Gun with the accles drum, but this one has 10 barrels, instead of 6, as the above. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 19:14, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping This link confirms that this is an gatling gun. Template:Ping You moved File:Cooper King7.jpg from Category:Manually powered machine guns to Category:Gatling guns. From what i wrote above and your edition, take that this is a colt model gatling gun, but do you know the model. M1883 or another? Also this image and File:3rd London Rifle Volunteers, 1897.jpg are categorized in Category:7th Battalion, London Regiment but the two images state that the battalion depicted is the "3rd London Rifle Volunteers", so shouldn't they be categorized under Category:3rd Battalion, London Regiment? Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 19:41, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh move it back if you disagree, I can't be bothered with this place any more. Andy Dingley ([[User talk:Andy Dingley|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 19:50, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping I never said that this wasn't an gatling gun, and i knew that this was never a mxim gun. Now i agree with your assessment, from what i "researched" and from what you wrote in Category:Accles drum (and probably an 6 barreled Colt M1883 from you agreeing that the drum was an accles drum and what you wrote on Category:Accles drum), what i asked is if the two images, if they depict the 3rd Batallion , shouldn't they be in Category:3rd Battalion, London Regiment instead of Category:7th Battalion, London Regiment. Good edits. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 19:59, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy with all the suggested changes, to be honest I had no hand in identifying the Army corps. --Broichmore ([[User talk:Broichmore|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 20:29, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

about the croped images[edit]

he,

I just wanted to know the reason you reverted my crops. So, I can prevent the error in the furture.

--Wvdp ([[User talk:Wvdp|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 20:21, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Ping Those images were digitalized by GLAM´s and those cropped areas are part of the original and integral to the document\image, not a recent addiction. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 16:03, 29 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Ping Commons:Media_for_cleanup states that its ok to crop the "excess "padding" on the sides of an image, especially from scans of images from printed works.". and the original version is preserved in the revision history. And except for maybe the astronaut images where there were some numbers at the side of the image, there were no important part of the images that were cropped. so I don't agree with your assessment. --Wvdp ([[User talk:Wvdp|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 09:35, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization of WMATA uploads[edit]

I have noticed that you are uploading a large number of files into Category:Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. This is a broad category that has numerous subcategories for stations, rolling stock, etc. Unless you are planning to add proper categorization and descriptions immediately after upload, please instead place files in a dedicated cleanup category (I recommend a title like Category:Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority files needing curation) and place that in Category:Files from Flickr needing cleanup. That makes it possible to track which files need curation, and prevents the content category from being clogged with unsorted images. If you do chose to sort the images yourself, I am glad to assist if you have questions about an ID. Looks good. I've deleted some duplicates as well - Ben Schumin occasionally uploads some of his images directly here as well. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 ([[User talk:Pi.1415926535|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 19:13, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

User Pibwl and categorising/DR's[edit]

Hi. I have seen some of the DR's you commented on that Pibwl has started. I understand your frustration at his DR's but instead of biting their head off, how about coaching them? They could really use your advice - perhaps they don't know where to look like you do. Gbawden ([[User talk:Gbawden|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 09:41, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Template:Comment The frustration is due to the lack of proper research when said research takes less time to do then to nominate files and is pretty easy to "know where to look" as this info is the filepage or is a click away and not in some arcane site\database\library\archive, and this user is not a newbie, but an user that has 16 years of experience in Commons. File:Germania, 1882 1020017 (4358323359).jpg — without the ugly brown stains[edit]

Why should we use a picture with so many ugly brown stains? I suggest to prefer the better copy without these awful stains and we shouldn't revert again the picture to the old and first version. Would this be alright, Tm?--Runologe ([[User talk:Runologe|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 16:27, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Comment First, it was in use in several other Wikipedias before your edits and adictions to other Wikipedias, second you reduced the resolution from 1 800 × 2 028 to 749 × 853, third the original is more faithfull to the condition of the historical book. If you like, upload your version under a new filename. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 19:29, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Dear Tm,

I do not understand, why do you think that the Lisbon category should contain almost 5000 elements. There is a template on it asking for re-categorizing and diminishing the number of elements in this category. I try to help, you withdraw my work. It is illogical and very unfriendly.Szilas ([[User talk:Szilas|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 16:14, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For instance I removed the File:"UBER EATS"! WHO? (30543907048).jpg from the category Lisbon, because it was anyway in the category Street photography in Lisbon and you have put it back. But maybe it was only a misunderstanding, in that case it's all right. Szilas ([[User talk:Szilas|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 06:35, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Alas, where it was taken? Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 11:57, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are doing the same with random categories at Category:Oxford. There is no reason for Category:October 2008 in Oxford to be within the 2008 and October subcategories and randomly stored at the main Oxford page. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 07:51, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
What were you expecting to happen when a third user moved dozens of images from Category:Oxford to "Category:[year] in Oxford", i.e. moved from where to when, alas removed the information of where it was taken and\removed the opportunity for others to move to more precise location categories. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 13:18, 10 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I expect that images that were taken in Oxford in that year would be organized as Oxford in that year. There is nothing gained by having all tens of thousands of Oxford images in the main Oxford category. If you want to create a gallery, that's a different matter. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:41, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have already answered you. And little more than 400 images are not tens of thousands, and we all are volunteers, not employees, so if you want to have the images moved more specific location categories like buildings, etc, make yourself the proper edits. Tm ([[User talk:Tm#top|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 19:50, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Are dates a proper subcategory or not? If I move it into buildings but don't bother with the date, that's okay with you but the reverse is a problem? Just because you don't find it useful doesn't mean it's not useful but fine, if you want them in the main category for further categorization, then say that in the edit summary and I'll ignore it. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 20:03, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Edit reverts of photos[edit]

Hi Tm I noticed you reverted my 27 clean ups. That is fine. I wont try again. But I would like to understand why it was done.

I posted on my page a few weeks ago that I wanted to do this and no one objected at the time. So I did a few to see what would happen.

I was disappointed because they were my flickr photos that were copied to wiki without my knowledge. I was just trying to clean them up and fix mistakes.

If you could respond, not because I am complaining but just so I can understand. Many thanks
