File:Nina Turner crop.jpg[edit]
This or the version is was derived from need to be deleted. I think this is a better version of the original file. Victuallers (talk) 14:23, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Victuallers, re: a better version, are you thinking of File:Nina Turner crop light and color corrected.jpg? I made that as a derivative work of the nominated file—I’m not sure what the rules are for preserving a file in a chain of authorship like that. Innisfree987 (talk) 18:37, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
- I'm guessing that we could have dozens of different versions in slightly better lighting. I think you should be bolder and load your improved version over the other image as an improved version. Cannot see anyone wanting the proveious version after seeing yours and if they insisted well ... its still there as an old version. Victuallers (talk) 10:37, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Victuallers See Commons:Don't be bold and Commons:Overwriting existing files. Also note that File:Nina Turner crop light and color corrected.jpg is in use in three articles across two Wikipedias. Why mess with this? Brianjd (talk) 11:24, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

- Speedy keep per my reply above and to preserve attribution per Innisfree987. Brianjd (talk) 11:25, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads up but I was proposing that the old file was deleted, not the one in use. Victuallers (talk) 12:09, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Victuallers We should keep the existing in-use file, instead of overwriting this one, to avoid creating problems for other projects. But when we keep the derivative as a separate file, we need to keep the original too, to preserve attribution information. Brianjd (talk) 12:34, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thx for yr patience. I can see that, I think the real point is that IMO if you find an image on commons that is just poor...and if by a small crop or contrast adjustment then it can be so improved that no one would consider using the original then it should be a new version that overwrites the poor version, not a new file. If I have misunderstood then that is fine. I wouldnt consider this "bold", but bolder then creating a new version. Have I misunderstood? Victuallers (talk) 21:09, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- This makes sense to me—thanks @Victuallers, in truth I learned the Derivative Toolforge tool first and only recently noticed the direct upload option, and so far I’ve only used it on files I personally added. But it makes a lot of sense to avoid having duplicates of lesser quality floating around creating confusion. Especially when the file history would always be there if someone had a strong preference against the change. Innisfree987 (talk) 01:53, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
