WLM[edit]
Hi, I've sent you an e-mail. As for some strange reasons my mails often are being marked as junk I'd be happy if you could briefly confirm that you've received it. Thank you very much in advance! --Code (talk) 07:23, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks @Code: , I have received and responded it. No junk problems this time, but thanks for checking. Effeietsanders (talk) 10:24, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
WLM in Esperantujo[edit]
Hi! I'm interested in run a edition of WLM in Esperantujo. I even already created Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in Esperantujo and added Esperantujo to the Likely to participate countries. I would like to received more help about how to organize the contest. --Sahaquiel - Hast du eine Frage? 07:26, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Sahaquiel,
- Thanks for your interest! At this point, the competition is not designed to handle participation on non-geographical criteria. The lists of monuments are typically accorded by some kind of official definition or status. It sounds like you're more interested however in recording the mentions (even street name signs?) and bits of heritage of a theme - in this case, the Esperanto language. While definitely worth while organizing, I'm a little uncertain that this would fall under the scope of Wiki Loves Monuments still. @LilyOfTheWest: what do you think? Effeietsanders (talk) 09:39, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hi! There is a list made by the Universal Esperanto Association about monuments and places related to Esperanto that we (meta:Esperanto kaj Libera Scio) are interested in document. Even streets (the street itself, not the only signs) named after Esperanto are of our interest, because is part of our history and heritage in that country/city. Like a monument, that mark that we were there and we have made something. There is no chance to run the contest as a part of WLM? Thanks for your help. --Sahaquiel - Hast du eine Frage? 17:09, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

- Hi Sahaquiel. As Effeietsanders said, WLM has been traditionally based on geographical boundaries. This has helped simplify parts of the process for organizing the contest: we accept official monuments list only (they're usually maintained by the corresponding local governments). It has also meant easier call for participation process. The biggest force for bringing users to participate in WLM in the past years has been the banner on Wikimedia sites shown to the traffic from the countries participating, in their language. If we go with Esperantujo as a WLM campaign, we need to answer the question: traffic from which countries should see the banner for your contest? This is especially important if there is overlap between other campaigns and your campaign. I will need some time to think about and discuss with others in the team whether we can support this. In the mean time, can you provide us with a link to the list made by UEA about monuments related to Esperanto? It would be great if the list contains: monument_id, monument name, monument location (geo-data, city, country, etc.). If the list doesn't have all this information, don't worry for now. Just share what you have. Thanks! --LilyOfTheWest (talk) 05:36, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
- Hi. About the banner, we can use a local banner in eo.wiki-projects about the contest and a campaign target to user with the interface in Esperanto I think as a start point. We've (the user group) strong bonds with other international Esperanto groups as the World Esperanto Youth Organization. We can ask them to publish (web and magazines) about the contest too. Anyway, Esperantist could participate in both national and Esperanto versions of the contest, in fact, I think is a good way to engage Esperantist to participate in their local contests too. The list is available as a free to download book to member of the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA). I uploaded it to my GDrive for you. It list 1044 monuments related to Esperanto. There is no geodata or id, but country, city (and even neighbourhood or district sometimes), establishment date and kind of monument appear in the list.

- Hey Sahaquiel, thanks for the poke. We did meet, but focused on different questions. I brought up your question, and expect we'll have an answer in the next 2-3 weeks. Thanks for your patience! Effeietsanders (talk) 20:44, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
- Great! I really hope that we can join you in 2017! --Sahaquiel - Hast du eine Frage? 21:38, 6 March 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the patience, Sahaquiel. We have discussed it a bit more, also given the broader context we're working in. The basis we're working from is 'national competitions' with lists (definitions) of monuments as set by official entities such as governments. This is, among others, to have a clear definition of what constitutes 'monuments' for participants, and to ensure that some subset of photos does not have an advantage over others because they can participate multiple times with the same photo. Exceptions may have to exist because of geopolitical sitations, but this is the basis we're working from.
- At the same time, we do recognize the enthusiasm with which thematic competitions can stir, as may be the case with promoting Esperanto heritage. For 2017, we would be happy to experiment how we can stimulate that, while staying true to the core principles of the international competition. The way I envision for that for this year, would be to organize a special thematic prize for the Esperanto heritage. This would be limited to a well-defined subset of monuments that are already on the national heritage lists of participating countries. The photos could qualify for the regular national competition of the country where the monument is located, but could at the same time compete for the thematic prize you would organize.
- On your end, this would require you to identify which monuments on the national lists would fall under the scope of your theme, and you would have to find ways to reach your potential audience (which you are uniquely qualified for). In that sense, this is an excellent theme to experiment with this approach, and evaluate whether this would work after this year. For the rest, you would of course also have to set up the usual infrastructure of a competition (prizes, web pages and jury), and we will have to find a way to identify the photos that participate in your thematic competition (presumably through bots that recognize the identifiers of the monuments on your list).
- Is this something that could potentially work for you for 2017? Effeietsanders (talk) 12:34, 12 March 2017 (UTC)
- Great! I really hope that we can join you in 2017! --Sahaquiel - Hast du eine Frage? 21:38, 6 March 2017 (UTC)

Bay Area WikiSalon photos[edit]
Hi - I noticed that you moved a number of photos I took at the Bay Area WikiSalon (BAWS) out of Category:Wikimedia office photographs and into Category:Bay Area WikiSalon. I'm fine with the former, which I don't think I added in the first place, but all of these photos were already in subcategories of the latter. So I've removed them from the top-level BAWS category, which was time-consuming as I did it one at a time, having accidentally removed the wrong category when using Cat-a-lot in the past. So if you remove the Wikimedia office category from any more of the BAWS photos, please don't also add the top-level BAWS category. Thanks! Funcrunch (talk) 13:42, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
- Hey Funcrunch,
- Sure, thanks. I wasn't aware they were also in lower level categories of that particular one - I assumed they would have been caught by automated processes if that were the case. Sorry it took you time! Effeietsanders (talk) 13:54, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
- No problem. I do like Cat-a-lot quite a bit for adding categories, but I'm nervous about using it for removing. I still use HotCat for both though! Funcrunch (talk) 13:57, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
- We should have at least a mass-self revert solution for that kind of situations :) (which I actually thought already existed, but I can't surface it) Effeietsanders (talk) 13:59, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

WLM 2017 and Flickr[edit]
Hi Lodewijk! I hope you are doing very well. I'm not sure if you knew that I'm currently working at Flickr and in years past I've been sad that we haven't been better able to participate with WLM. I wanted to see if we could do more coordinated efforts around WLM this year and get the Flickr community excited about participating. Are you currently one of the main points of contact for WLM international? If so, can we put together a time to talk or do a video call to discuss what might be possible in collaboration?
thanks,
Almonroth (talk) 22:55, 11 April 2017 (UTC)

File mover[edit]
Hey Effeietsanders,
Effeietsanders (talk) 15:58, 1 May 2017 (UTC)
Natuur12 (talk) 20:08, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

to your userpage!Hi there! My name is Kevin, one of the organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Last year, you contributed to our 2016 event. It was a great success thanks to you and many others, with over 1,700 people contributing over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States. Over 1,000 of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, making our open knowledge about United States history and heritage all the better.
I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information, including updated tips, lists, and prizes. Like last year, you'll be able to upload your new photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).
Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, and we hope to see you in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 08:05, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 is weer begonnen![edit]
Beste Effeietsanders,
Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 is vorige week begonnen!
Let's make Commons Conference a reality[edit]
Hello Lodewijk,
I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users and WLM organizers. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and add your ideas; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.
Cheers,
--MB-one (talk) 20:41, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
Press mentions Italy[edit]
Hi Effeietsanders. About the press mentions for Italy: the 5 link are included on the other page. I think that so the list on Commons is incomplete and a little bit redundant. What do you think? --Cristian Cenci (WMIT) 15:02, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Cristian,
- The list on your wiki is great, but hiding it behind a link would reduce the visibility for other teams - which would be a pity! Also, for archive purposes I like it when a complete list is eventually on commons, but that is a matter of making a copy by the end. Effeietsanders (talk) 15:07, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
Scratch[edit]
Hi I was just wondering what your scratch page means! Muon (talk) 06:34, 23 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Muon: That was to do a sanity check if most wlm related uploads were actually getting the template and going through the channels we would want them to go through. I was unable to definitively identify problems. Effeietsanders (talk) 22:31, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
Wikinieuws[edit]
Ymnes (talk) 15:57, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
uploaded before sept[edit]
Thank you for the information. He/She uploaded them some days before, so, it is not a problem with the time offset. Do you recomend us to remove the template from these articles of simple not taking them in account for the contest? --Millars (talk) 16:48, 7 September 2018 (UTC)
- I would suggest removing them from the pages if possible - it clears any doubt and expectations (and has the helpful side effect to synchronize the various counters a bit better :) ) Effeietsanders (talk) 16:49, 7 September 2018 (UTC)
WLM in Slovenia[edit]
Hi. I saw that you are active in organizing WLM this year, so perhaps you can give me some pointers. I started to create material so that my country (Slovenia) can participate for the first time, but I'm not sure whom to ask for additional technical help (see Commons talk:Wiki Loves Monuments 2019/Upload campaigns). Thanks. — Yerpo Eh? 05:54, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Yerpo: Welcome! Of course, happy to help and give pointers. Are you at Wikimania by chance? In that case it may be easiest to just meet up quickly with one of the international team members, and to come to the WLM session at 3pm today. Otherwise, I'm happy to figure out something else. Is there something in particular that you're struggling with? Effeietsanders (talk) 08:09, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- No, sorry, couldn't make it to Wikimania this year. Like I said, the main issue for now is that when I generate the upload link and test it, Commons says that the
wlm-si
campaign doesn't exist yet, so probably someone should create that. Secondly, I created some of the templates listed at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2019/Upload campaigns already, but I'm not sure everything is in correct place, because the standard language code for our language (as commonly used for translations) issl
, whereas the alpha-2 country code issi

Please check my recent edits and verify. - Right now I'm setting up the landing page and putting monument lists together (the latter one is not straightforward, because there's no FoP in Slovenia), which will hopefully be finished within next week. Should I contact you or someone else to have a look at it when it's done? Thanks, — Yerpo Eh? 08:27, 16 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Yerpo: Ah, I see. Yes, the upload campaigns will have to be created first by us, and this will happen later this month. Because it's your first time, it doesn't exist yet from a previous year. It's good to double check the country code though, I agree we should use the correct one! I admit to having used the wrong one before.
- It sounds good to discuss the FoP and monument list situation a bit more when you're ready for it. How about we set up a call? I could set up a quick call on Wednesday, for example? Feel free to email me to discuss further on my username at gmail.com. Effeietsanders (talk) 08:40, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

DR[edit]
Effeietsanders (talk) 22:18, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
WLM Bolivia 2019[edit]
I had some personal problems and got behind the organization. I'm updating the webpage now to reflect the changes for the contest this year. Thanks for being there. I'll drop you a message again when everything is set. --Alhen .::··¨ 01:46, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Facebook[edit]
Jcb (talk) 20:40, 7 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Jcb: Ja, ik had dat gezien. Anyhow, volgens mij is alles hierover wel gezegd. Effeietsanders (talk) 21:37, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

I was looking at {{Kenya Monument}}. Do you know where the Kenyan government has posted the list?
Thanks!
Evrik (talk) 16:25, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Evrik: This list is on w:en:List of sites and monuments in Kenya. I don't have more detailed information readily available than what you can find in the history of that page. Effeietsanders (talk) 16:54, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- Yup. I'm looking for the source ... :-) Evrik (talk) 16:59, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Evrik: You'd have to get in touch with the Kenya user group of the editors that were involved at the time - they were in touch with the museums at the time (note that in several African countries the equivalent lists are defined by one national museum or another, rather than the Government). Given the one page snapshot that I've seen, I highly doubt that this was taken from a website, but rather through collaboration and negotiation pulled from some archive. Important message for file movers[edit]
A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Donations and permissions for files[edit]
Dear Effeietsanders,
In general with donations I think the source and the original filename from the source should be mentioned in the metadata, to spell it out for instance for the image at the right
|accession number = TIF 1-2 Achterberg-01_00001 |source = A. A. van Achterberg Collection
In this way, although this is not legally required, an exact link can be established between the final file name on Commons - here ASC Leiden - van Achterberg Collection - 01 - 01 - Un désert avec quatre dromadaires et un homme touareg - Biroten, Algérie, février 1985.tif - and an extra second permission by a donor (quite apart from the licence CC-BY-SA-4.0 for a whole collection) for, e.g., an approved spreadsheet mentioning this accession number and the source. So you have the legal link between
- supplementary second permission/approval by the donor (for, e.g., a spreadsheet), next to the licence CC-BY-SA-4.0 by the donor
- a source file (name, Achterberg-01_00001)
- a final file on Commons (ASC Leiden - van Achterberg Collection - 01 - 01 - Un désert avec quatre dromadaires et un homme touareg - Biroten, Algérie, février 1985.tif).
Another example at the right has metadata
<current_owner>Koninklijke Bibliotheek</current_owner> <alternative_number>1700 C 2 voor p. 48</alternative_number> <alternative_number.type occurrence="1" lang="nl-NL">inventarisnr.</alternative_number.type> <alternative_number.type occurrence="1" lang="en-GB">inventory no.</alternative_number.type> <object_number>5093</object_number>
or plainly
Collectie Koninklijke Bibliotheek Blue pencil.svg wikidata:Q1526131 Inventarisnummer 1700 C 2 voor p. 48
Here the filename in the source is not even mentioned, as was indeed the case in the first example.
(Note that the mention of a filename is not legally required. The permission for the second example is not complete for the USA, so a warning message appears. Further note that i do not cite any other discussions.)
Have a good day and please support Wikimedia and respect the freedom of expression and of donating of donors in your words and your deeds, Hansmuller (talk) 13:29, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Hans. I don't think it will be helpful for clarity of communications to start a second conversation here. I suggest we remain focused on the conversation through OTRS. Effeietsanders (talk) 16:22, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Effeietsanders , an example with pictures is the only way to clarify the proof you wanted to see: a link of the final file(name) to the spreadsheet approved by the donor with original file names and excluded files. There is no more proof to be had, i would like there to be, but there really isn't. But it is real, forceful and enough. Behind the beautiful blue sky there comes ... the vacuum. Good New Year! Hansmuller (talk) 10:57, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
- PS. It is like global warming, caused by humans. Was the proof sufficient? Some people thought it was not, you doubted. But in fact, already in 1979, the Charney Report made the point with convincing simulations (the scientific picture was complete, theory, measurements, simulations). There is an analogy with the Van Achterberg proof :-) Have a heart and some brains, Happy 2020, Hansmuller (talk) 16:42, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

I noticed you edited the thresholds between colors on the California COVID-19 map. I presume you would like to make these thresholds uniform over different states, which makes sense, however I think that calls for using a more logical scheme. Since epidemic growth is an exponential phenomenon, in my opinion it makes the most sense to keep the gaps between subsequent thresholds at roughly the same ratio. Depending on the spread of the data, good schemes are:
- 1, 10, 100, 1000, ... (factor of 10 between adjacent thresholds)
- 1, 3, 10, 30, 100, ... (factors of 3 and 3.3333 between adjacent thresholds)
- 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, ... (factors of 2 and 2.5 between adjacent thresholds)
Thanks a lot for your contributions!
PlatypeanArchcow (talk) 18:21, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
- I indeed took the opportunity to create them for most states, and use the same scheme. With the original scheme, a bunch of states showed no more differentiation. I tried to find a middle road between natural thresholds and displaying the entire range. What I ended up at, was growing by a factor 5 most of the time, except for the last step. If you look at the number of counties in each category, this gives a more realistic distribution. There are some more reasons why I'm hesitant to evaluate prevalence beyond 1% (in heavily hit regions, the real numbers are probably even higher than what we have confirmed) but that's more speculation. I also played with 0.02-0.08-0.32-1.28 but that looks too geeky, so rounded it to near round numbers from there (in hindsight 1.5% is probably closer). I could rescale everything next run, but am hesitant to do that too frequently, as it may affect how people interpret it. More colors than 4 also makes interpretation harder. Unless there's a major objection, i would suggest to keep it as it is, but reconsider your suggestion at the next rescaling? I quietly hope we won't need it though... Effeietsanders (talk) 21:11, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
- @PlatypeanArchcow: Just to let you know that I had to re-do the scaling/coloring recently (sadly, the old scale no longer fit the data) and took your suggestion under advisement accordingly for the more recent scale. Given the range, the 1-3-10-30 rhythm made most sense. Effeietsanders (talk) 20:15, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed that several of the maps you created for the US state articles for the coronavirus pandemic are tilted, including the ones for Wisconsin and Maryland. Could you possibly correct these? They might be disorienting for the readers. Sahitana (talk) 00:00, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Sahitana,
- Someone on enwiki brought it up too. It's part of the script that I made to create state maps from the US-wise map. I'm not sure how to fix it yet (I'd welcome any suggestions), but will look into it, once I got the uploading handled a bit better. Effeietsanders (talk) 00:13, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Effeietsanders: Perhaps it has to do with where the map is centred? If you have used the US map, then the point of centre would be for the country as a whole, meaning that states toward the extremes would be slanted. Maybe you could change the code to have the maps centred on the state. I don't know how the specific code for this would work, but some rudimentary knowledge of GIS leads me to believe this might be the problem. (Also, I think it was me who brought it up on enwiki, and was directed to your commons talk page by another enwiki editor.) Thanks! Sahitana (talk) 18:25, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Sahitana: Ah, I didn't see your message on enwiki, but two people also pinged me there on my talkpage there.
- But yeah, I understand why the issue happens, I have not found a way to fix it though. It may well require recreating the maps from scratch. Effeietsanders (talk) 19:53, 1 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Sahitana: With the gracious help of a friend, we managed to re-create the maps from TIGER, now with a different projection. Please check and let me know how this works for you. Effeietsanders (talk) 06:27, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for your work on updating the projection to correct the tilt. This seems to have worked well. Except, I think some of the maps now appear vertically compressed. This is definitely the case with Wisconsin. This is still slightly disorienting, but definitely less so than the US-centred projection. I'm unfamiliar with TIGER and I unfortunately don't know how to fix this. But if you and your friend have some time, this might be worth your attention? Sahitana (talk) 16:59, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Distorted maps[edit]
You might already be aware of it, but many of your maps with the latest update, like File:COVID-19 Prevalence in Mississippi by county.svg, are very distorted. Just letting you know --Leviavery (talk) 21:33, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Leviavery: Thanks for pointing out. I thought first it was a purge issue, but it turned out to be that mediawiki displays svg differently from my computer's renderer. I made the dimensions explicit, and that should fix it. Effeietsanders (talk) 23:22, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
Please use ISO-approved typography for easier reading[edit]
Hi, thanks for your work on the COVID info.
But the key to outbreak percentages needs en dashes, and a single percentage sign would help:
1.00%+ confirmed infected
0.50–1.00% confirmed infected
0.10–0.50% confirmed infected
etc.
It's an important source, so worth correcting. I'd do it myself, but I can't see how to edit that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Tony1
- @Tony1: Hi, thanks for your kind words. I know there is sometimes general disagreement about these typesetting conversations between different communities, and I don't want to get in the middle of that (just not my cup of tea or interest). However, feel free to make the changes yourself if you think it's consistent with policy. You can find the template that contains the legend on Wikipedia here and the one on Commons is here. Request[edit]
Hello.
Can you add the border of South Sudan which became independent in 2011 in File:Wikimedia chapters.svg, File:Wikimedia chapters x.svg, File:Wikimedia chapters existing.svg and File:Wikimedia chapters existing and regional user groups.svg? (There is not a Wikipedia chapter in South Sudan.) ?
Yours sincerely, Maphobbyist (talk) 10:59, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi,
- These maps have been quite heavily edited, and it's far for me to add this border. I'm afraid this is outside my capabilities right now. It would probably be easier to recreate the map from scratch, and that takes too much time for me - sorry. Effeietsanders (talk) 20:11, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

Suggestion to increase the brackets of File:COVID-19 rolling 14day Prevalence in Illinois by county.svg[edit]
The map is completely black as every county has more than 500 confirmed new cases per 100,000, so the map isn't very useful anymore. Maybe have the highest bracket be 2,000+ cases per 100,000, and increase the lower brackets?
And also File:COVID-19 Prevalence in Illinois by county.svg, which is completely dark red except for one county.
--73.75.250.106 18:18, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
- I'm a little hesitant about the 14-day-average, because black just means it's... quite bad in those areas. Hopefully the numbers don't stay high that much longer, and there's a bit of differential again. Now for the cumulative numbers... you're totally right as those will never come down. They do also mean less as time progresses, as people are getting infected for a second time, but that's another story. I'll look into it, thanks for the suggestions. Effeietsanders (talk) 19:17, 28 November 2020 (UTC)
- It's bad now, but imagine how much worse it can get - I think the colors should be adjusted a bit, because right now, it seems like a lot of places are far above 500+ cases per 100k people per day, and distinguishing between 500 cases and 2000 cases per 100k people per day is probably useful. Elliot321 (talk) 01:55, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
- I have at least added a tier for 10%+ on the general prevalence. Hopefully we'll never get to the point that we need 30%+... Effeietsanders (talk) 04:46, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- And also updated the rolling 14-day new cases with a new color scheme... Very sad. Effeietsanders (talk) 05:02, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Update COVID infection map?[edit]
Hi Effeietsanders. I included one of your 14-day rolling prevalence maps in the infobox for w:en:Statistics_of_the_COVID-19_pandemic_in_Wisconsin. It was the perfect in-a-nutshell illustration, but infection rates have dropped in many counties since Nov. 7, and I suspect some would no longer be black. Any chance you could generate an updated version of that map? Thanks for considering. -Jeff the quiet (talk) 21:14, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Jeff the quiet: I'm running the script (near) daily, and I'm afraid the numbers didn't exactly get any better... Quickly eyeballing: in the past 14 days confirmed cases statewide went from 329,924 to 409,054. That's about 80k on a population of 5.8M, which is about 1379 cases per 100,000. Effeietsanders (talk) 21:26, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- (as clarification: new uploads don't register when the content of the file is identical. Because the state has been almost all-black for the past 3 weeks, the map hasn't changed either. Maybe I should reconsider what I said above based on this...) Effeietsanders (talk) 21:30, 30 November 2020 (UTC)
- You're right. The number of new cases has come down a lot, but I didn't realize how far into the black we were. I hand-calculated one of our better counties and indeed it is still in the black. I'll keep eagerly watching for some purple to appear. Thanks for checking. -Jeff the quiet (talk) 04:59, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi! I removed the current version of the map now from one article as the displayed data seem obviously off and contradicting published data. Take a look at Missouri in particular. Imho it should not be used in any articles, untill that issue is fixed (See also: en:File_talk:COVID-19_rolling_14day_Prevalence_in_the_United_States_by_county.svg). My guess is that somewhere in the script corrupted or falsely assigned data is used. Maybe in particular such a sensitive issue it would be useful to run a few more(?) checks again external publications.--Kmhkmh (talk) 16:44, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Kmhkmh: more likely, Missouri changed the definitions of how they report their data in the past 14 days, and that means that it displays a spike. We have seen this before in Massachusetts (the other way around). There is little that can be done about this, if you want to use a single consistent data source. While I was unable to pin down yet what caused this particular change in Missouri, it looks like the JHU project transitioned to other definitions early March, which may cause some data anomalies. If you feel that the script got corrupted somehow, feel free to check the repo. Effeietsanders (talk) 17:27, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- PS: I'm not sure what page you intended to link to, but it doesn't seem to match your description of the issue. Can you double check? The talk page you link to seem rather innocent suggestions which I didn't respond to at the time. Effeietsanders (talk) 17:31, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- I fixed the link above. For some reason that particular picture/map seems resides in en.wp rather than in Commons.--Kmhkmh (talk) 19:13, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- That link that you sent links in turn to a Google query, which in turn links to this page on NYT which explains the peak. It looks like the data is accurate, but needs context to be understood (it may be misleading without). The picture doesn't reside on enwp, but on Commons. You just accidentally created the talkpage on enwiki. If you look on the image page, it clearly states the image is located on Commons :). Effeietsanders (talk) 19:20, 16 March 2021 (UTC)
- Ok, but why did the talk page get created in en.wp rather than commons? Looks like the proxy page for the File in en.wp allows the creation of a separate talk page not linked to the file's talk page on commons, a bit irritating.--Kmhkmh (talk) 02:12, 17 March 2021 (UTC)
- I'm afraid that's just the magic of enwiki trying to show images on commons as if they were also locally stored. Far outside our control ;) Effeietsanders (talk) 02:26, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Westhoek verbeeldt[edit]
Effeietsanders (talk) 06:37, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
Valse bronvermelding foto[edit]
Effeietsanders (talk) 20:33, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Hög tid att ladda upp: Wiki Loves Earth 2022![edit]
Hej,
(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Sweden or other participating countries.)
/Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 13:41, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]
Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Äntligen maj: Wiki Loves Earth 2023![edit]
Hej,
(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Earth 2023 in Sweden or other participating countries.)
/Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 12:46, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2023[edit]
Hello! In 2021, you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 500 people contributing over 5,500 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. You can see the top-ten winners of the US competition here.
While the United States did not participate in Wiki Loves Monuments in 2022, I'm pleased to say that we're back for 2023 through the month of October! I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our 2023 event page for more information.
Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2021, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you have any questions, please leave them on the event talk page.
Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 09:12, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
