CA prop 187 map

It looks like you must have accidentally uploaded the wrong map in your most recent revision of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1994CaliforniaProposition187.svg. The previous maps look a lot more plausible anyway. New LA Metro Icons

Hi Fluffy, I noticed your great icons for the new LA Metro lines and wonder/hope you might have interest in helping me with a coding project to incorporate them? I am working on the backend lua module to handle the swapping of and display of the icons throughout Wikipedia as they change over and would like to get the whole set in place so I can finish testing and wrap it up - but didn't want to clobber anything you had started. I noticed you created a few last week and they work great. However, the colors don't match my reference and wonder if you know something I don't? Since you got the font right (DIN Alternate Bold?) I thought you might be getting these from source instead of creating them? My references are pretty lame but I'm looking to create the complete A - J icon set set from the graphic in this article from last week. I am a rank amateur with Illustrator and since it's something you already started - figured I would ask for your help first. Please ping me with any questions here or on Wikipedia. Thanks! How do you make such good svg maps!

Hi, I keep noticing great maps you've made in an svg format and I keep wishing I knew how to make them. I used mapchart.net to make some png maps, which you replaced with much better svg maps on some US senate elections pages. I tried saving these files as svgs but the color all just goes to black. Could you please help an amateur photo editor who's trying to start updating Wikipedia maps with some tips on how you make these svg maps? Thanks and keep it up with your great work on the wikis!

@Pluma: Sorry for responding late but sure here are some tips. I almost always use Adobe Illustrator to create those maps and diagrams, but sometimes some files don’t work with Illustrator due to them being programmed in another program, thus requiring me to use Inkscape then. I have never used any other SVG editor. What’s probably happening with your edits is that the SVG code is invalid. If I were you I would download Inkscape or purchase Illustrator to create SVG diagrams. Once you have an appropriate program all you need to do is download a map from Commons, edit it to your desire, then save it, and then upload it to Commons if desired.

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Hi, It looks like something went wrong in your update to File:US House 2020 retirements.svg, shifting state and district borders. I reverted the change. I don't see any news about a retirement in CA-47 though, so I didn't change the file after reverting. Was it a different district you were looking to update? @Tcr25: It’s all good that you reverted it it isn’t that big of a deal. I used Illustrator to edit the image but it seems that Illustrator messes up SVG’s created within Inkscape even though the errors don’t show up in Illustrator. Fluffy89502 ~ talk 19:43, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

California Prop 24 (2020)

Hello there, I would like to add that the map you have created in regards to Proposition 24 is not entirely accurate. I haven't looked at every county, but in Los Angeles County, fewer than 60% voted yes, while in San Francisco a majority voted no. I would suggest the California Secretary of State website for more accurate figures https://electionresults.sos.ca.gov/returns/maps/ballot-measures/prop/24 .

SMOM on visa policy maps

Hello, I see that you insist on having SMOM on visa policy maps. However, when an entity is not recognized by a country, these maps usually don't show it at all, rather than showing it with another color. For example, the visa policy of the US shows Western Sahara as part of Morocco, the visa policy of China shows Kosovo as part of Serbia, and both show Abkhazia and South Ossetia as part of Georgia. Since the US and China don't recognize SMOM as a sovereign entity, for consistency SMOM should not be shown on their visa policy maps.

I agree with showing SMOM on visa policy maps of countries that recognize it, such as the Schengen Area, but its current display is excessively prominent, and its square could be confused as representing its location as an island. So in this case I propose moving the square and SMOM label to a corner of the image, outside the globe outline, and removing the flag.

In addition, you seem to have saved the SVG files with software like Inkscape so it has disturbed their text structure and added unnecessary code. In the future, please save these files as text. Heitordp (talk) 03:54, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

Yeah I don’t think this is in the public domain. I uploaded this when I was less familiar with copyright law and just assumed that since it used census data that it was in the public domain. Feel free to delete the post and if needed feel free to contact me in order to state that I myself do not think that such upload is in the public domain. In light of a statement made by Rose Montoya after the White House flashing incident that toplessness is legal in D.C., I double-checked the veracity of her statement and added relevant references to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topfreedom_in_the_United_States, both case law and statute.

I downloaded your by-state Topfreedom map and edited it to reflect the current status of D.C. statute and case law. I made the edits on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with the Inkscape SVG editor from the repository. The only change I made was copying the light blue color of the 'legal' legend to the small bubble for D.C.

Then I updated your by-state map of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Female_toplessness_laws_in_the_United_States_by_State_and_Territory.svg

I've double-checked and the changes appear to have carried through to pages that use this file, and the thumbnails all appear to be correct, and downloading the file retrieves my version. However, there are a couple of potential problems with the resulting Wikipedia database as a result of my changes that I didn't anticipate and don't know how to repair. Sincerest apologies, I humbly beg your assistance in righting things if required?

1) I did not know how to obtain a file date and time before saving the file, and the file name that appears in the URL when I view the updated file lacks this timestamp plus it also lack an 'archive' in the url heirarchy, so it may not have been named and stored properly. I'm an infrequent editor and assumed that the timestamp would be automatically prepended, plus I also assumed that the URL would be automatically assigned. I have no idea what I did wrong or how to fix it, or if it is even a problem at all.

2) Although the file change has propagated through apparently without issues, the file that I edited is still attributed to you. I'm fine with that. I don't edit Wikipedia often and I don't need credit for my contributions. If you need to change anything about the way the file is attributed so you don't take responsibility for my changes, that's fine too.

I noted inconsistencies in the files that the various URLs retrieved from that page, but they all seem to have cleared up in the time it took me to write this note to you. I'm assuming that either I had a umatrix script blocking issue or that these changes took time to propagate and have now corrected themselves. When I used the download link at the top and the file link/thumbnail link to my updated version in the revision list, all retrieved files resembled your latest file rather than my updated file. They now return my updated file and I'm not sure what the problem was.

Thank you for your work on this SVG and for any fixes you might incorporate to the changes I made. Again, since I factt-checked and added references, I think this change is safe. My edits may be okay as-is but I'm agreeable if you feel that you need to make additional changes. CherylJosie (talk) 01:33, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

@CherylJosie: It's not a problem and it just takes time for the file to update systemwide. After 24 hours or so the uploaded file should be consistently displayed and downloaded when prompted while the previous versions are available further down the commons page of said file. Dear colleague! You asked in the description of your edit to undo it if it is bad. I think your edit is interesting and almost perfect, but I noticed two problems: 1. it calls to non-existing subpage of non-existing template (they both never existed); 2. it contains five left curly brackets but seven right curly brackets. I made my best to solve these problems without destroying the idea of your edit. For now, the template has different colours at different pages; see for example File:Berkeley campus Campanile.jpg (brown), File:Lynching-of-casey-and-cora.jpg (white), File:PeraltaHome SanLeandroCA 1860.jpg (green), et caetera.
