file deletion[edit]

hi, alot of my files were deleted from wikimedia even though they were my personal creation. (flags relating to my fictional country, Durovsk, image of a fictional ocean liner, Leningrad, and several fictional company logos). all of these were deleted, but im not sure why. it shows that you have sent the deletion request. i don't know too much about wikipedia, but why did this happen? if you could explain further, i would like that.

happy american independence day, if you celebrate

yours sincerely, kieran / JustHereToLeave (talk) 23:20, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The purpose of Wikimedia Commons is to host freely licensed educational content for use on other Wikimedia sites, such as on Wikipedia. Commons is not a public art gallery; original artwork and other fictional material is generally not within the site's scope, and is routinely deleted. Omphalographer (talk) 23:27, 4 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
do u know anywhere else i can host my images permanently then? i like using a wikitext sandbox a lot so i really want to keep my fictional stories and stuff
kieran / JustHereToLeave (talk) 00:23, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't an appropriate use for Wikimedia Commons. Consider hosting your images on an art gallery site like DeviantArt or Tumblr. Omphalographer (talk) 00:40, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Scans from IA[edit]

Hi, Can you look over me recent contributions in terms of catalog curation in respect of Scans uploaded from IA (amongst other sites)?

Also - Category:Scans from the Internet Archive/unverified , If there are efforts you could make in reducing the backlog, thanks :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:35, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Leonard Arthur Bethell letters[edit]

I note you deleted Bethell-Bailey_Letters.pdf recently, and suggested using Wikisource instead. Happy to do that - I have discussed with the British Library (owners of the original documents) and they are happy for me to put my transcript up, but not the photos of the documents. Odd rules, but that's what they say. So - do I need any special guidance to put this up on Wikisource, or shall I just go ahead and try it ? Charles.bowyer (talk) 16:54, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not terribly familiar with Wikisource's policies on hosting transcriptions without scans. I'd ask for guidance at s:Wikisource:Scriptorium. Omphalographer (talk) 17:32, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
All done - now on Wikisource. Thanks for your suggestion. Charles.bowyer (talk) 09:17, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Could i get your opinion here? Trade (talk) 21:11, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Old Pexels uploads[edit]

Please note that per Template:Pexels-Cc-zero, images uploaded to Pexels before 5 July 2018 are accepted under CC0. To check the upload date, you can go to the image link (e.g. https://www.pexels.com/photo/landscape-photo-of-night-city-745243/), click on the "More info" button on the bottom right of each photo, and there will be a "Photo details" popup that says e.g. "Uploaded on December 18th, 2017". -- King of ♥ 06:42, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. Something doesn't seem right here. Some photos on Pexels.com specifically say that they're CC0 licensed, e.g. this photo says it's "Free to use (CC0)", whereas most Pexels photos just say "Free to use" in that spot. I've been marking images for deletion which doesn't say "CC0" there, with the understanding that those images are non-free.
Are we working under the assumption that all Pexels photos where the Pexels image page shows a "uploaded on" date before 5 July 2018 are actually CC0, even if they don't say so? That seems kind of sketchy to me.
Omphalographer (talk) 07:41, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The archived licensing page linked to from {{Pexels-Cc-zero}} says "all photos on Pexels are licensed under the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license. This means the pictures are completely free to be used for any legal purpose." CC0 is now an option but not mandatory for all images on Pexels. Since all CC licenses are irrevokable, those original CC0 licenses that were applied until 5 July 2018 are still valid. Nosferattus (talk) 21:09, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, okay. Are we confident that the Pexels upload date reliably indicates that the photo was available on Pexels on that date? I'll update my review process if so. Omphalographer (talk) 21:19, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. The CC0 license was mandatory before that date. -- King of ♥ 04:48, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Erroneous indication of speedy delete[edit]

The scientific popularization book that you nominated for speedy deletion is licensed under CC-BY, as indicated here. Please, I ask you to restore the file. Sincerely, Sturm (talk) 01:28, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The second page of the book contains a copyright notice which states otherwise:

Todos os direitos dos autores reservados. Nenhuma parte deste livro poderá ser reproduzida, sejam quais forem os meios empregados, sem a permissão por escrito dos autores.

In the absence of any information to the contrary, Commons generally treats copyright information embedded in files as definitive. Do you have any other sources to confirm that the CC-BY license is correct?
Also, in the future, please make sure to place comments on user talk pages, not on user pages.
Omphalographer (talk) 01:59, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sturm and Omphalographer: In any case, this is certainly not clear enough for a speedy deletion, so I've restored it and sent it to DR: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Aprendendo+ciência++e+sobre+sua+natureza +abordagens++históricas+e+filosóficas.pdf. -- King of ♥ 07:48, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

MCGAMER YOUTUBE[edit]

Could you archive the talk page so the templates starts working again? Trade (talk) 15:27, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. For a speedy deletion through duplicate, there is specific detail of which you may need to note, such as colouration, file type, etc. as factors. If you think that a file shouldn't exist as it duplicates unnecessarily, rather than is an exact duplicate, then please use the deletion request process. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 21:54, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is this in relation to File:Bandera de El Salvador.jpg? That file explicitly says that its source is File:El salvador flag 300.png, and there's no visible difference between the two besides the image dimensions. I'll take it to DR, but this seems unnecessary for an image with no usage outside a user sandbox. Omphalographer (talk) 22:06, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As I said in the discussion pages, I had forgotten I posted this to categorize images. I have come to the realization that I'm never going to use it, so you can delete all the entries I created. You can delete all the pages.

Here's how to make sure you remove all of them. First, go to either template {{ICS}} and delete every page that uses it. Second, go to Category:ICS deletable pages and delete only the subcategories beginning with I and 'Pages in category "ICS deletable pages"' that are under the letter I; the other pages belong to others. Then go to Special:PrefixIndex select prefix ICS (it is all caps), select namespace "Template", click "show" and delete all of them appearing on that page. You might also want to use that page to search for "Image classification system" under namespace Commons. This should remove all of it. Rfc1394 (talk) 14:43, 15 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
